A 1967 graduate of Geneva High, Bruce was a three-letter winner in lacrosse. He was named to the All-Upstate New York 2nd Team as a junior and was a 1st Team selection his senior year. As co-captain his senior year, he was the recipient of the Covert Award. Bruce also lettered in basketball and football.
Bruce went on to Cornell where the Big Red won the Ivy League Championship all three years that he lettered. As a junior he was selected as the team's Most Improved Player. His senior year he was Honorable Mention All-Ivy League and received the Phillips Award as Cornell won the first ever NCAA Division I National Championship. Bruce was also selected to play in the North/South Senior All Star Game.
A highly-respected lacrosse official, Bruce officiated on the high school and collegiate level for 35 years. He officiated in the NCAA Tournament including the Division III finals and the Division I semi-finals. He also officiated the NY State Public High School finals. He was a founding member of the National Intercollegiate Lacrosse Officials Association. Bruce was inducted into the Geneva Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 and was elected to the Rochester Chapter of U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2006. After retiring from officiating in 2009 Bruce went on to help his son Bruce Jr. coach the varsity lacrosse team at Marcus Whitman.
Bruce who served the Geneva Sports Hall of Fame with dedication for many years as its treasurer passed away in May of 2013 at the age of 63.
